The Australian Government Attorney-General’s Department has commissioned the Monash Gender and Family Violence Prevention Centre together with colleagues from Edith Cowan and Sunshine Coast universities and the Older Person Advocacy Network (OPAN) to undertake a national research project on elder abuse in regional, rural and remote Australian communities.

We understand that service provision must be specialised for this context, and that identifying, addressing, and preventing elder abuse in non-urban communities presents particular challenges. We hope this research will highlight issues faced by victim-survivors in these communities, as well as identifying best practice approaches among support services.

Our project involves multiple phases of data collection, including with practitioners and advocates (through an online survey, focus groups, and interviews), individuals with lived experience, and key academics and experts in the field. By embedding advocacy, practice and lived experience, we will provide national insights into the experiences, needs, barriers and challenges in addressing, responding to and preventing elder abuse in regional, rural and remote locations, and recommendations and opportunities to enhance policy and practice.
