Masterclass 1: Equipping Teams to Challenge Racism and Bias
Wednesday 6 May 2026 | 10am-1pm | Launceston
Racism is embedded in systems, structures and everyday practices across our workplaces and communities. For leaders in the community services industry, understanding and addressing racism is essential to delivering safe, equitable and effective services and improving the safety and support of people of colour in your workplace.
This introductory Masterclass builds the knowledge, shared language and confidence needed to address anti-racism in a meaningful and practical way. Designed for all levels of experience, the session creates a respectful space for honest conversation and supports participants to move beyond awareness into action. Learn more about the Masterclass.
This Masterclass will cover:
- Shared language and baseline understanding of what racism is and how it shows up in practice;
- The historical context of racism and the ongoing impacts of colonisation;
- How racism operates through systems, structures and norms;
- Exploring power, privilege and lived experience to build empathy and self-awareness;
- The role of leaders in creating safe, inclusive communities and workplaces; and
- Moving from awareness to action, applying foundational knowledge to real conversations and practical anti-racist practice.
By the end of this Masterclass, participants will leave knowing how to:
- Understand and use appropriate, nuanced vocabulary related to race and racism;
- Contextualise racism within a structural and systemic framework;
- Develop a deeper understanding of the impacts of racism on people of colour and First Nations people;
- Build critical thinking skills to recognise and analyse racist stereotypes and tropes in context;
- Explore how privilege and disadvantage operate within and across communities; and
- Feel equipped and confident to take practical actions that improve safety for people of colour and address racial injustice.
This Masterclass is designed for community services leaders, practitioners and frontline staff from organisations seeking to strengthen inclusive and equitable practice.
