Information and Advice Regarding Changes to Fixed-Term Contracts

Last year, the Commonwealth Government passed laws that limit the ability of organisations to employ people on extended fixed-term contracts. The laws came into effect on 6 December 2023.

It is important that community service organisations fully understand the implications of the changes and where as employers we must act to comply with the new laws. To assist, TasCOSS have prepared a checklist to determine if a fixed-term contract is appropriate and in line with Fair Work requirements, and detailing where relevant exemptions may applyFair Work have also prepared detailed information and advice, including a Fixed-Term Contract Information Sheet.

Under the legislation, casual employees who have worked for their employer for 12 months with a regular pattern of hours need to be offered the option to convert to full-time or part-time (permanent) employment. This is also known as ‘casual conversion.’ TasCOSS have made available a responding to a request for a casual conversation checklist to provide clarity around employer requirements.
