Shelter Tas is the peak body for Tasmania’s housing and homelessness services. We are a not-for-profit organisation and a registered charity.
Who we represent
Shelter Tas members include all the Specialist Homelessness Services and community housing providers. Our members also include academics, other community sector peak organisations, architects, developers, specialist builders, politicians, community leaders and individual members. We advocate for Tasmanians on low and moderate incomes, people at risk of or experiencing homelessness and the housing and homelessness services who support them.
Tasmania’s housing and homelessness sector
- Employs over 850 people across the state, and is expanding
- Manages over 6 900 tenancies across the state, as not-for-profit community housing providers
- Supports around 6 500 people per year, in about 50 Specialist Homelessness Services in Tasmania, including emergency shelters and shelters for women and children escaping family violence
What Shelter Tas does
- We advocate for a better housing system, focusing on the housing needs of people experiencing and at risk of homelessness, and Tasmanians on low and fixed incomes
- We lead our sector on emerging issues such as responses to COVID-19
- We engage widely and strategically with our members, with regular forums and issue-based consultation
- We provide information to our members, and they provide on-the-ground information to us
- We provide a Tasmanian perspective to our national peaks and build on other jurisdictions’ best practice in our own policy work
- We are a trusted conduit for information between government and the housing and homelessness sector
- We provide a submission each year to the State Government Budget Process, drawing on consultations with our members about their needs and gaps in the housing and homelessness system
- We deliver federal and state submissions on legal changes, policy ideas and special issues; such as disability, family violence, building standards, and youth homelessness
