TasCOSS, as part of a coalition of justice and social service organisations including Prisoners’ Legal Service Tasmania and 54 reasons, call on the Premier to demonstrate his stated commitment to the safety of our children by closing Ashley Youth Detention Centre as a matter of urgency and work with the community service industry around progressing alternative arrangements.

TasCOSS applauds the advocacy of all Tasmanians who gave evidence at the recent Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings, particularly those who bravely shared their own experiences of abuse, trauma and neglect. We also recognise and commend the tireless dedication of all community organisations who have supported Tasmanians through this process. 

A coalition of justice and social service organisations have united to urge the Tasmanian Government to immediately release all children detained at Ashley Youth Detention Centre to prevent further harm to their safety and wellbeing.

Public holidays can now be substituted under the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services (SCHCADS) Industry Award. This change follows a decision by the Fair Work Commission, the national workplace relations tribunal. It applies from the first full pay period starting on or after 11 September 2023.

A sold out delegation of over 180 leaders, industry experts, practitioners and supporters of the Tasmanian community services industry will gather in Hobart for the TasCOSS Conference 2023 over the next two days. Together, we will explore broad trends impacting the industry including workforce development and sustainability, lived experience advocacy and community-led, place-based practice.

TasCOSS is pleased to see the Legislative Council’s Inquiry into Energy Prices in Tasmania, given the supply of energy is an essential service but its cost is unaffordable for more and more Tasmanian households.

All Tasmanians deserve to feel safe and supported in their families and communities.  

Ahead of tomorrow’s National Cabinet meeting (16 August), TasCOSS and the broader COSS Network call on state and federal governments to step-up and take significant action to address the rental crisis that is hitting many Tasmanians hard.
