ABOUT THE BRAIN INJURY ASSOCIATION OF TASMANIA
Established in 1998, the Brain Injury Association of Tasmania (BIAT) provides a public voice for all Tasmanians impacted by brain injury. It is a non-government, state-wide, not-for-profit organisation recognised as having specialist knowledge of brain injury and its effects on individuals, families and communities.
BIAT works to improve the lives of people with brain injury, and their families and carers, across Tasmania and nationally. BIAT delivers programs that build knowledge, independence and community inclusion, through initiatives such as the National Assistance Card, the JustACE Program, the About Me Program, and community engagement and peer support activities. The organisation also provides information, education and community awareness activities to support prevention of brain injury, as well as to improve understanding of brain injury and encourage more inclusive services and communities. Current BIAT programs are funded by the Motor Accident Insurance Board, The Tasmanian Government (Department of Justice), Commonwealth Government (Department of Health, Disability and Aging) and donations.

POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking people to fill roles to complement and strengthen the skills and knowledge base of the existing Board.
As a member of the Board, you will contribute to the organisation’s strategic direction and be involved in the shaping of the organisation for future success and long-term sustainability.
BIAT has navigated a period of significant change in response to the roll out of the NDIS. In this time the organisation has shifted from being a peak body under state block funding, to project-based operations and non-NDIS service delivery. As a result, BIAT has undertaken rapid growth with associated capacity building. The BIAT Board requires a range of skills and experience to ensure good governance and oversight of the range of services now provided by the organisation.
The ideal candidate will have experience and understanding of corporate governance of community organisations. Applications are welcomed from people impacted by brain injury, and/or a knowledge and understanding of ABI.
The BIAT Board seeks representation from the following groups/persons:
– lived experience of ABI
– family member or carer of a person with an ABI
– with a financial background
– with a legal background
– acquired brain injury service provider or therapist
– with a communications, marketing or media background
– with medical experience in the ABI area

WHAT WE OFFER
This is a voluntary role, without remuneration.
We offer reimbursement of expenses and professional development opportunities.

COMMITMENTS
Board meetings are held every two months, normally from 5.30pm on a Monday, with subcommittee meetings held on an as-needs basis. Meetings are held at the Association’s offices in the ABC building, Hobart or via virtual meeting.

ELIGIBILITY:
Qualified to hold the position of a member of a Board of an Incorporated Association.
Knowledge and understanding of corporate governance and statutory compliance requirements, with previous experience in the not-for-profit sector desirable
The ability to review our strategic directions through constructive questioning, suggestions and to contribute to effective decision making for the future of BIAT:

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to function effectively as a collaborative team member and cultivate positive working relationships.
