Children and young people have the right to be heard and to influence decisions that affect their lives. To put this principle into practice, the Department for Education, Children and Young People, in collaboration with the Youth Network of Tasmania, is developing a Child and Youth Participation and Empowerment Guide as part of the Participation and Empowerment Strategy.
Children and young people have the right to be heard and to influence decisions that affect their lives.
This principle is a fundamental belief of the Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP), reflected in their 2024-2030 Strategic Plan. To put this principle into practice, DECYP, in collaboration with YNOT, is developing a Child and Youth Participation and Empowerment Guide as part of the Participation and Empowerment Strategy.
The Guide will…
- Provide practical guidance and tools to help DECYP staff and community sectors to create safe, inclusive opportunities where participation is genuine, not tokenistic.
- Be grounded in rights-based practice aligned with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
- Be informed by evidence and lived experience, and promote cultural safety, transparency, and accountability.
- Empower children and young people (0-25 years) to share their views confidently and contribute their lived experience to decision-making.
- Build capacity for meaningful engagement and foster a culture where every Tasmanian child and young person’s voice is sought, valued and taken seriously.
YNOT warmly invites our members and supporters to join stakeholders from youth, community and government services to inform the development of this Guide. We also highly encourage you to ask young people you work with if they’d like to come along and be part of the conversation!
