Inspired by her own experiences as part of a queer family, acclaimed filmmaker Sophie Hyde delivers her most personal story yet. Jimpa is an authentic and intimate film, bursting with compassion for each of its characters. We are pleased to present this film as part of Seniors Month 2026, which is coordinated by COTA Tasmania.
Join WIO during Seniors Month 2026 for special screenings of Jimpa — a film based on the family of acclaimed Australian filmmaker Sophie Hyde.
Funny, accessible, full of sadness and joy, and featuring a wonderful multigenerational cast, Jimpa celebrates LGBTIQA+ culture as it is practised across three generations. Grandfather Jim faces the challenges of ageing as a gay man from a generation that never expected to grow old; non-binary teenager Frances grapples with disillusionment as their heroes fall short of their ideals; and mother Hannah navigates the differing perspectives of her father and child.
Jimpa explores complex themes, with a story centred on family, both biological and chosen. Please note that the film includes some nudity and adult themes and is rated MA15+. Anyone under 15 must be accompanied by an adult or guardian.
Working It Out is hosting screenings around the state. Tickets are only $5, or you can ‘pay one forward’ to support someone else to attend. Each event includes a panel of lived experience speakers to build connection and understanding and share stories within our communities.
