Update: Fair Work Commission's SCHADS Award Review

The Fair Work Commission (FWC) is still reviewing the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 to address gender-based undervaluation, with a report to the Expert Panel released this week.

Recent conferences aimed to agree on a new classification structure were held across November and early December, but no consensus was reached. The FWC’s Expert Panel will now determine key issues, with hearings scheduled to begin again on 19 December 2025. Stakeholders have requested additional time for submissions, so final decisions may extend into early 2026.

Key matters under review include:

  • Entry-level classifications for disability and social/community workers;
  • Pay rate discrepancies, progression rules for part-time and casual employees; and
  • Qualification requirements, including recognition of lived experience.

The proposed structure spans 10 levels, from entry-level clerical roles to senior managerial positions, with weekly pay ranging from $999.40 to $2,582.60. This review is intended to modernise the award and ensure fairer pay for roles traditionally undervalued due to gender bias.

TasCOSS is working closely with the national COSS Network to monitor this process and engage with stakeholders to ensure the industry’s voice is heard. We will provide timely updates as the Expert Panel moves toward a decision and support members in understanding and implementing any changes.

TasCOSS will continue to keep you informed with updates and opportunities to contribute to submissions and industry advocacy.
