Tasmania is the first state to offer financial redress to people who have an eligible charge or conviction successfully removed (and are alive at the time of application) under the Expungement of Historical Offences Scheme. Payments of $15,000 for a charge, $45,000 for a conviction and $75,000 for a sentence including gaol time are available.
People who are related to, or otherwise know, a deceased person who was charged or convicted with homosexual and cross-dressing offences, can also apply to have them removed from their criminal record. A person who makes an application for expungement on behalf of a deceased person will not receive a redress payment.
