26Ten is excited to launch its new Tasmanian Adult Literacy Strategy to help Tasmanian adults improve their reading, writing and everyday maths. The strategy will focus on strengthening public awareness, partnerships and fostering a culture of learning and collaboration.

Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, launched the Strategy alongside 26Ten Coalition Chair Malcolm Wells and adult learners Cedrick Smith and Viv Blackwell at Hobart Library.

It has three clear goals:

  • Tasmanians know about adult literacy.
  • Tasmanian adults can get help with literacy.
  • Tasmanian communities have the skills and literacy resources needed to help adults.

Priorities of the Strategy include:

  • Making plain English training more accessible;
  • Supporting people from non-English speaking backgrounds with spoken English;
  • Working with parents to help them better support their children’s learning needs; and
  • Providing more training for those working in adult literacy.

Our previous 10 year Adult Literacy Strategy exceeded targets and supported thousands of adults to improve their literacy and numeracy skills in Tasmania.
