The Australian Government is reviewing the Disability Discrimination Act 1992

The aim is to make sure it is working to protect people with disability.

The government is asking for everyone’s views to make sure all voices are heard. This includes people with disability and people who have duties under the Disability Discrimination Act, like employers, small businesses, education providers and people who provide goods and services.

About the review

The government established the review in response to the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability (Disability Royal Commission) which was one of the biggest investigations into the experiences of people with disability in Australia.

The government says they will use the feedback to help consider the best way to reform the Act to make sure it’s fit-for-purpose.

How to get involved

You can have your say by:

1. Providing a submission: Responding to the questions in the Issues Paper. You can do this as an individual or on behalf of an organisation. Submissions are able to be made in written, audio or video form.

2. Completing the Community Survey. This survey has a shorter set of questions for people in the community who do not want to respond to the questions in the Issues Paper but would still like to contribute to the review.

All the information you need including Issues Papers is available here https://consultations.ag.gov.au/rights-and-protections/dda-issues-paper/

The submission process and survey are open until 24 October 2025.

As part of the consultation, government will be holding in-person and online events.

3. You can also attend one of the community forums or online roundtables. The forums will be held as hybrid events so you can join online from anywhere. There will be a series of online roundtables.
