Climate change impacts are disproportionately hurting the communities that we all serve. The Australian government needs to address the issue at its root cause and lower our carbon emissions as quickly as possible, to protect people facing disadvantage and marginalisation.

All countries are required to submit their 2035 emissions reductions targets this year. It was meant to happen in February, but Australia delayed doing so because of the federal election.

The Climate Change Authority will provide advice to the Government – we are now expecting that to occur in July 2025 – and the Government are aiming to make an announcement in September 2025.

There is a short window to influence and push for greater ambition.

Science* and justice says Australia’s target should be net zero by 2035 if we are to limit warming to 1.5 degrees. There is talk of a target in the high 60s. We have to get them to aim higher!

While we recognise there will be challenges, so many of the solutions we need are already here. From large scale renewables to more energy efficient and electric homes, workplaces, industry and transport.

We have an opportunity to use our voice and expertise to make it clear that action to reduce emissions is critical to protect people facing marginalisation in our community, not a threat.

We are updating a joint social sector statement we coordinated last year aiming for at least 100 signatories. Will you join the existing 41 social sector organisations and add your name to the statement by the 19th of June and help make it clear our sector supports fast, fair and inclusive action on climate change?
