Senate Inquiry into Social Services Legislation Amendment (Strengthening Income Support) Bill 2021

TasCOSS believes that the proposed new rate of JobSeeker and related payments will, just like the former Newstart payment, trap people in poverty and make it more difficult for them to engage in education, training and employment.

We continue to argue for a minimum income floor across the working age payments system set at the current pension rate of $472 per week for a single person, with base rates of allowances increased to this floor. In addition, depending on need, people should also receive supplements for housing, disability and illness and a single parenting supplement.
