TasCOSS supports the Tasmanian Government’s commitment to reducing family violence, acknowledging the significant impact family violence has on individuals and communities in Tasmania.
TasCOSS supports many amendments contained in the Family Violence Reforms Bill. For example, we agree that removing s54 from the Criminal Code Act 1924 is a positive step towards making this legislation more consistent with other Tasmanian laws and community expectations. We also support the sections of the Bill which broaden both the definition of harassment and the inclusion of certain offences as family violence offences. However, we are concerned about the effectiveness of certain provisions of the Bill in achieving the stated objectives and put forward a number of recommendations.
