  • Tasplan International Women’s Day Awards for Excellence 2021 Virtual Event
    4 March 2021
    12:15 pm - 1:45 pm

Hear from Grace Tame (2021 Australian of the Year) as we reveal this year’s winners!

The Tasplan International Women’s Day Awards for Excellence 2021 are designed to recognise and give visibility to outstanding contributions by women in the Tasmanian State Service, the community services industry and local government.

This year, the event will be going virtual! This will enable those from around Tasmania to attend the event from home, their office or join with colleagues in a meeting room at work.

We are thrilled to be joined by keynote speaker Grace Tame, a inspirational Tasmanian advocate for survivors of sexual assault who was recently awarded 2021 Australian of the Year, along with sector leaders.

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women — while also marking a call to action for accelerating gender balance. The theme for International Women’s Day in 2021 is #ChooseToChallenge. A challenged world is an alert world. Individually, we are all responsible for our own thoughts and actions — all day, every day.

The six cross-sector award categories are:

  • Tasmanian State Service: Inspirational Leader
  • Tasmanian State Service: Aspiring Leader
  • Community Services Industry: Inspirational Leader
  • Community Services Industry: Aspiring Leader
  • Local Government: Inspirational Leader (Elected Representative)
  • Local Government: Inspirational Leader (Officer)

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Grace Tame, 2021 Australian of the Year

Grace Tame is an outspoken advocate for survivors of sexual assault, particularly those who were abused in institutional settings.

From age 15, Grace was groomed and raped by her 58-year-old maths teacher, who was found guilty and jailed for his crimes. However, under Tasmania’s sexual assault victim gag laws, Grace couldn’t legally speak out about her experience — despite the perpetrator and media being free to do so.

Grace has demonstrated extraordinary courage — using her voice to push for legal reform and raise public awareness about the impacts of sexual violence. She is a regular guest speaker for high profile events and television programs and uses her media profile to advocate for other vulnerable groups in the community.
