- Policy Conversations: Rethinking the Use of ‘Vulnerable’
22 July 2021
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
**** SOLD OUT! ***
Join us for our next Policy Conversation where we will attempt to tease apart both the problems and the hope in using the term ‘vulnerable’ in the community services industry.
The conversation between Dr Catherine Robinson (Anglicare Tasmania Social Action and Research Centre) and Dr Lucy Mercer-Mapstone (TasCOSS) will invite participants to consider the impact of the language we use to describe the individuals and communities we work with, both in policy and throughout our work practices.
Together, we will start a conversation about the need to strengthen our understanding of vulnerability if we are to make more powerful links between the systems we work within and the circumstances of our individual clients.
NB: Attendees are invited to read the two-page article by Munari, SC et al. (2021) published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health which prompted this Policy Conversation topic prior to attending the session, however it is not a prerequisite and you will still be able to engage with the subject matter.
About the Facilitator:
Dr Catherine Robinson is a social researcher with the Social Action Research Centre at Anglicare Tasmania. She is a sociologist with a broad interest in the relationship between vulnerability, justice and place. She has a long-held commitment to qualitative research and advocacy in the areas of homelessness, complex trauma and social care. Her current work focuses on understanding the experiences and support system needs of Tasmanian children and young people who experience high vulnerability, including unaccompanied homelessness.
You can join the session remotely using Zoom Video Conferencing. Details on how to join the Zoom Video Conferencing session will be distributed closer to the date.
Registration closes 5pm, Thursday 15 July 2021. For more information, please contact Dr Lucy Mercer-Mapstone, Stakeholder Engagement & Policy Officer, on (03) 6169 9511 or email Lucy.
Policy Conversations is a free series of one-hour events hosted by TasCOSS. Each event includes a briefing on a relevant issue, followed by facilitated discussion.
The Policy Conversations series aims to:
- Give TasCOSS and the industry an opportunity to share and discuss current state and federal policy issues; and
- Provide a forum to gather input for the industry’s advocacy work, such as submissions and lobbying.
