Cultural awareness means being aware of and developing sensitivity to cultural difference and cultural diversity. It involves knowledge, attitudes and values that demonstrate an openness and respect for other people and their cultural values and practices.
Aboriginal cultural awareness training, run by Dewayne Everettsmith (Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre) and held at piyura kitina (Risdon Cove), will assist you to work and engage more effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
This full-day training is for community service workers, managers and volunteers and will help participants to:
- Learn the context of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing and the impact of historical events,
- Have an awareness of the Aboriginal community in Tasmania and the participants own culture and attitudes towards Aboriginal people; and
- Change work practices to become more culturally safe.
