Local Government Democracy Puts Power in Our Hands

By Kym Goodes, CEO, TasCOSS
Local councils can have a big impact on the lives of Tasmanians. They ensure the economic, social and cultural development of our communities, and they enable us to live, work and thrive in the place that we call home.
And with Local Government elections under way, there is a sense of change in the air, people are realising their power and they want to affect change.Across Tasmania there is a record number of candidates. In the City of Hobart, there are double the candidates running for the seat of Lord Mayor in 2018 compared to 2014.
We all have power for change in our communities and one of the easiest ways to use your power is to vote, so we can contribute to and have a voice about the Tasmania we want to live in.
When we actively participate in our democracy we show that we care about our communities and want to be heard.
Our sector has a strong presence at a local level in communities across Tasmania and it is critical we have a strong voice in shaping and influencing the change we need to ensure all Tasmanians can live a good life.
So it is more important than ever to use your power and vote at the upcoming council elections.More information on voting in the upcoming elections.
