The Salvation Army is pleased to host Safe from the Start training.

The Safe from the Start project was initiated by The Salvation Army, in partnership with two universities (UTAS and Swinburne, Vic) and women’s domestic violence services. The project aim was to identify the impact witnessing domestic violence has on young children, how services and parents could better support children who had been exposed to domestic or family violence and how the community could become more aware of the possible impact on children.
The research quote ‘a child exposed to violence is forever changed, but not forever ‘damaged’ – and there is a lot we can do to improve their future prospects’ (Baker, Cunningham, 2007) provided the positive message that one encounter by a caring adult with a child affected by violence could assist to bring healing for that child.

Safe from the Start – a one-day training program and resource tool kit that is evidence based, early intervention and a best practice model of engaging with children who have witnessed domestic violence using ‘activity based play’ to encourage workers & parents to listen to the voices of children who may feel scared, worried or sad about what they have seen.

The project has won a number of national awards including the top National Crime and Violence Prevention Award in 2011, Child Protection Award, NAPCAN – Play Your Part Award in 2013 and HESTA Award in 2015.

Over 1000 family violence, child protection workers, counsellors, foster carers, family and children’s services workers have attended training nationally in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

The Safe from the Start training is an introduction to understanding the effects of family violence on children including:

  • The research findings on the impact on children who have witnessed or experienced family violence.
  • What is family violence, activity-based-play and how to use contents in the Resource Tool Kit.
  • Each participant will receive Safe from the Start research report, Training Manual, USB pen with the training PowerPoint presentation including YouTube clips, 2  DVD’s:  Baptcare’s  ‘Not in My House’ and Safe from the Start training DVD, brochures/posters, Duluth Wheels and Attendance Certificate.
