Palliative Care Tasmania
Free community online education sessions about end-of-life issues. Learn how to plan, what to consider, who is involved in care, how to stay well for longer, how to support others, advance care planning and how to have conversations around end-of-life wishes. Be informed and understand how to take more control over your life and end-of-life.
In March, as part of Advance Care Planning Week we are exploring Advance Care Planning in Tasmania.
Many people in the community fear the end stage of life, not because we are necessarily afraid of dying but because we fear such things as loss of mental faculties, control and dignity, being a burden on family and not receiving adequate pain relief. As competent adults we do have a say in how and where we are to die, and whether to accept or refuse life prolonging treatment.
Advanced Care Planning and writing up an Advance Care Directive provides a way for competent people to document legally what type of medical attention they would or wouldn’t want if they no longer had capacity to make their own decisions.
The session will cover:
- What is advance care planning ACP?
- The benefits of ACP.
- Advance Care Planning & Advance Care Directives.
- When are advance care directives used and who should have one?
- Legalities of Advance Care Planning in Tasmania.
- The Tasmanian Advance Care Directive.
- Guiding your care.
- Understand substituted decision-making options in Tasmania.
Sessions suitable for anyone who wants to understand more about planning ahead and how to support themselves and others.
