Anti-Poverty Week supports the Australian community to have an increased understanding of poverty and to take collective action to end it.
This year Anti-Poverty Week has partnered with the ACOSS Raise the Rate campaign. The campaign aims to increase the rate of Newstart and other allowances by $75 a week. Almost 21,000 Tasmanians receive Newstart payments which have not been increased in real terms for more than 25 years.
The safety net provided to job seekers by income support payments, such as Newstart, is a fundamental part of the Australian system providing support to those who need it most. For Newstart to work it needs to be enough to cover the basics so people who are looking for a job, studying, caring for children or recovering from injury or illness, can live with dignity.
