2019 Tasmanian Media Awards: Public Service Journalism Award

Congratulations to Alexandra Humphries for winning the TasCOSS Public Service journalism award at the 2019 Tasmanian Media Awards held in Hobart on Thursday 9 May.

Alexandra’s commitment to telling the story and raising the issues of those who don’t have a voice was demonstrated in the body of work she produced on the housing crisis.

On behalf of TasCOSS, thank you for shedding light on the intense housing stress facing low income and disadvantaged Tasmanians.

  • Alexandra HumphriesThe Mercury (now at the ABC), “Families forced to live in tents at Hobart Showgrounds,” “Property managers say up to 50 people turning up to open homes amid Tasmania’s housing crisis” and “Properties being used for accommodation soars, hitting rental crisis harder.”

Judges’ comments: Alexandra Humphries’s stories investigating Hobart’s growing housing crisis demonstrated a strong feel for news, a keen sense of public service and an ability to produce informative and empathetic copy. Breaking the story of working families living at Hobart Showgrounds, Alexandra’s work contributed to housing being at the top of the agenda for last year’s state elections.
